Far, Far from Ypres

Folk / CDTRAX1418
Greentrax - $A28.30 '

The album has a more Scottish perspective than any of its predecessors, but when one considers that Scotland suffered the most soldiers killed (per head of population) of any nation that fought in the conflict, such an album is greatly overdue. It is also doubtful if the songs, poems and music of WW1 have ever before been covered in such depth.

Mark Dunlop

islands on the moon

Folk / CDTRAX307
Greentrax - $A28.30 '

As a strong traditionalist, his subtle yet melodic approach to rhythmic accompaniment has contributed to his growing reputation as one of the leading Scottish-based bodhran players and with his soulful delivery on Malinky`s recordings and in their live shows, Mark is becoming recognised as a burgeoning talent as a fine young singer in the Ulster tradition.

Solas

For Love and Laughter

Folk / COM4490
Compass - $A28.30 '

For over a decade, Solas has been hailed as the leading Irish-American supergroup. Through line-up changes and experiments with style and technology, the band has pushed the boundaries of-but never strayed too far from- their Irish roots. Adding the exquisite vocals of exciting young Kilkenny singer Mairead Phelan to the existing line up of Seamus Egan, Wilfred Horan, Muick McAuley and Eamon McElholm the band heads into their second decade of playing tight, fiery Irish music! Album also features duets with Canada`s folk phenoms The Dukhs.

The three most influential groups in traditional Irish music-the Bothy Band, Planxty, and the Chieftains-have only one man in common. He is Matt Molloy, and this is his landmark solo album, which first showed why he is often referred to as the greatest flute player ever. He puts his own indelible stamp on his tunes by virtue of singularly dazzling flute playing.

Mulligan/Compass - $A28.30 '

First released in 1976, this album was immediately hailed by critics and listeners alike as a signal that a new direction in Irish music was being forged.
Over 30 years later, it is every bit the awesome achievement it was played up to be. Its influence is felt even now everywhere Irish music is heard or played. Old Hag You Have Killed Me contains many Bothy Band Classics and one of the greatest musical lineups ever:

Vinnie Kilduff

The Boys from The Blue hill - (re-issue)

Folk / LUN3050
Mulligan/Compass - $A28.30 '

This classic album is a great introduction to the Irish whistle, although Vinnie Kilduff is something of a multi-instrumentalist as well.

Mary Hampton

My Mother`s Children

Folk / NAVIGATOR15
Navigator Records - $A30.10 '

Mary Hampton has recorded with Eliza Carthy and also worked with Stereolab offshoot Imitation Electric Piano. Since becoming a solo performer Mary has been invited to open for an eclectic mix of artists including St Etienne, British Sea Power, and label mates Bellowhead. Her first solo album is a distillation of her musical influences (which include Anne Briggs, Bob Dylan, Bach, traditional fiddle music and British bird song). The subjects Mary covers are timeless and the language she uses is raw and poetic.

Benji Kirkpatrick

Boomerang

Folk / NAVIGATOR2
Navigator Records - $A30.10 '

Described by Time Out as a ``fretboard wizard``, Benji Kirkpatrick is a gifted guitar player and an engaging and experienced performer. Over the decade or so that he has been working on the folk scene, he has honed a distinctive style which has rare energy. Though the new album is inspired by the folk scene in which he grew up, most tracks are original and self-penned. The album features Ben Nichols (bass) and contributions from Sue Harris, John Kirkpatrick, Seth Lakeman and Stu Hanna.

Faustus

Faustus

Folk / NAVIGATOR5
Navigator Records - $A30.10 '

Comprised of three of the most pivotal players in the English roots revival of the past decade, Saul Rose, Paul Sartin and Benji Kirkpatrick, Faustus boast a trio of travelling minstrels whose musical Curriculum Vitae is frankly intimidating. This is the sound of three of England`s finest traditional musicians, exceeding even the highest expectations of their well documented, individual talents. Together they create a rare and precious musical atmosphere, both joyful and moving in equal measure, a band with genuine chemistry.

Fairport Convention

Live Across The Centuries

Folk / SCCD1156
Smith & CO - $A37.50 '

Fairport Convention have often been credited as the first English folk-rock band, the first to send electricity coursing though the veins of the traditional folk music scene. This is a compilation of some of the band's finest moments on stage around the world. Through numerous personnel changes and coming together again, Fairport continues to attract new audiences and this 2CD allows us to realise quite why this intrinsically English band have been able to survive for so many years as a live force.
