Generosity

Folk / WGS365CD
Wildgoose Records - $A28.30 '

This album celebrates 20 years of Folk for MS. The organisation was born from a one off fund raising concert which was so successful that it was decided to do another the next year and……. Over the 20 years more than £35,000 has been raised to help and support those with multiple sclerosis and the project has had the support of some of the best known names in the folk world, all of whom have given their services free. Just a few of them are on this album. We have tried to cover many aspects of the folk genre and to make the album varied and interesting to many tastes. All profits from this album will be going to Folk for MS.

The Askew Sisters and Craig Morgan Robson

The Axford Five

Folk / WGS364CD
Wildgoose Records - $A28.30 '

This is a celebration of the songs of five women singers who lived in rural Hampshire 100 years ago. Folk song collector George Gardiner turned his sights to Hampshire in 1904 and was pleasantly surprised to find a wealth of traditional songs still being sung in this previously untouched area. One of the reasons that Gardiner was so successful here was his meeting with Sarah Goodyear of Bermondspit Cottage, Axford. She hosted meetings of singers at her house so that Gardiner could note the songs more easily, along with Charles Gamblin, his music notator. It was generally much harder to find women singers as they were much less prominent in the pub singing communities he often collected from. In addition to Sarah’s own great contribution, this CD celebrates the songs of Marty Munday, Elizabeth Randall, Charlotte Hall and Emma Hopkins. Together these women, known affectionately as the Axford Five, provided a rich variety of material, from songs of love and loss, murder and mischief to the downright risque!
